Analysis of experiments in square lattice with emphasis on variance components. i. Individual analysis PAB
Silva,Heyder Diniz; Regazzi,Adair José; Cruz,Cosme Damião; Viana,José Marcelo Soriano.
This paper focused on four alternatives of analysis of experiments in square lattice as far as the estimation of variance components and some genetic parameters are concerned: 1) intra-block analysis with adjusted treatment and blocks within unadjusted repetitions; 2) lattice analysis as complete randomized blocks; 3) intrablock analysis with unadjusted treatment and blocks within adjusted repetitions; 4) lattice analysis as complete randomized blocks, by utilizing the adjusted means of treatments, obtained from the analysis with recovery of interblock information, having as mean square of the error the mean effective variance of this same analysis with recovery of inter-block information. For the four alternatives of analysis, the estimators and estimates...

Bayesian inference in a quantitative genetic study of growth traits in Nelore cattle (Bos indicus) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Faria,Carina Ubirajara de; Magnabosco,Cláudio de Ulhôa; Reyes,Arcadio de los; Lôbo,Raysildo Barbosa; Bezerra,Luiz Antônio Framartino; Sainz,Roberto Daniel.
The objective of this study was to estimate (co)variance components and genetic parameters for weights (W) and scrotal circumferences (SC) at 365 and 450 days of age, of Nelore (Bos indicus) cattle, using Bayesian inference in single and multiple-trait animal models. The fitted linear models included, besides the animal and residual random effects, the contemporary group (herd-year-season-sex-management group) and age-of-dam as "fixed effects". The analyses were carried out using a Gibbs sampler implemented through the MTGSAM program. The heritabilities (in parentheses) obtained fitting single-trait models were W365 (0.49), W450 (0.52), SC365 (0.68) and SC450 (0.66). Estimates of means, modes and medians for genetic parameters obtained from marginal...

Bayesian inference in genetic parameter estimation of visual scores in Nellore beef-cattle Genet. Mol. Biol.
Faria,Carina Ubirajara de; Koury Filho,William; Magnabosco,Cláudio Ulhôa; Albuquerque,Lúcia Galvão de; Bezerra,Luiz Antônio Framartino; Lôbo,Raysildo Barbosa.
The aim of this study was to estimate the components of variance and genetic parameters for the visual scores which constitute the Morphological Evaluation System (MES), such as body structure (S), precocity (P) and musculature (M) in Nellore beef-cattle at the weaning and yearling stages, by using threshold Bayesian models. The information used for this was gleaned from visual scores of 5,407 animals evaluated at the weaning and 2,649 at the yearling stages. The genetic parameters for visual score traits were estimated through two-trait analysis, using the threshold animal model, with Bayesian statistics methodology and MTGSAM (Multiple Trait Gibbs Sampler for Animal Models) threshold software. Heritability estimates for S, P and M were 0.68, 0.65 and...

Bayesian inference on field data for genetic parameters for some reproductive and related traits of Nellore cattle (Bos indicus) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Faria,Carina Ubirajara de; Magnabosco,Cláudio de Ulhôa; Reyes,Arcadio de los; Lôbo,Raysildo Barbosa; Bezerra,Luiz Antônio Framartino; Sainz,Roberto Daniel.
We used Gibbs sampling in single and two-trait animal models to estimate genetic parameters for some reproductive and related traits of Nellore cattle (Bos indicus). Female traits were age at first calving (AFC), cumulative productivity (CP) and adult weight (AW). For males, scrotal circumferences at 365 and 450 days of age were analyzed. Gibbs sampling using the ‘Multiple Trait using Gibbs Sampling under Animal Model’ (MTGSAM) program of Van Tassel and Van Vleck was used to estimate the (co)variance components of the traits and conduct genetic analyses. Heritabilities were AFC = 0.26, AW = 0.36 and CP = 0.25 under the single-trait animal model. The mean, mode and median estimates for genetic parameters obtained from the marginal posterior distributions...

Correlation and path analysis of agronomic and morphological traits in maize Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Silva,Tallyta Nayara; Moro,Gustavo Vitti; Moro,Fabíola Vitti; Santos,Durvalina Maria Mathias dos; Buzinaro,Rodolfo.
ABSTRACT The efficiency of selection can be broadened for certain traits using estimative of genetic parameters, which are fundamental for plant breeding. The estimative of genetic parameters allows identifying the nature of the action of genes involved in the control of quantitative traits and evaluates the efficiency of different breeding strategies to obtain genetic gains. Therefore, this study aimed to verify the variability and correlation between morphological and agronomic traits in synthetic maize populations, in order to practice indirect selection. Thirteen populations were evaluated in field experiments at Jaboticabal- SP and Campo Alegre de Goiás-GO, using randomized block design, for lodging (LOD), culm breakage (CB), plant height (PH), ear...

Diallel analysis for frogeye leaf spot resistance in soybean PAB
Gravina,Geraldo de Amaral; Sediyama,Carlos Sigueyuki; Martins Filho,Sebastião; Moreira,Maurílio Alves; Barros,Everaldo Gonçalves de.
Seven soybean cultivars (Bossier, Cristalina, Davis, Kent, Lincoln, Paraná and Uberaba), with different levels of resistance to Cercospora sojina, were crossed in a diallel design to determine the general (GCA) and specific (SCA) combining abilities relative to the inheritance of the resistance. Race 04 of the fungus was inoculated in the parents and in the 21 F1 hybrids in a greenhouse in a completely randomized design, with 12 replications. The reactions to the disease were evaluated 20 days after the inoculation, always on the most infected leaflet. Both GCA and SCA were significant for all the evaluated characters, being inferred that, for the expression of the characters, the additive, dominant and, possibly, epistatic genic actions were important....

Dominance, epistasis, heritabilities and expected genetic gains Genet. Mol. Biol.
Viana,José Marcelo Soriano.
Although epistasis is common in gene systems that determine quantitative traits, it is usually not possible to estimate the epistatic components of genotypic variance because experiments in breeding programs include only one type of progeny. As the study of this phenomenon is complex, there is a lack of theoretical knowledge on the contribution of the epistatic variances when predicting gains from selection and on the bias in estimating genetic parameters when fitting the additive-dominant model. The objective of this paper is to discuss these aspects. Regarding a non-inbred population, the genetic value due to dominance and the epistatic components of the genotypic value are not indicators of the number of favorable genes present in an individual. Thus,...

Editing and modeling of milk production data for genetic evaluation of Murrah buffaloes PAB
Souza,Andréa Carolina Santos de; Rezende,Marcos Paulo Gonçalves de; Carneiro,Paulo Luiz Souza; Campos,Bárbara Machado; Malhado,Carlos Henrique Mendes.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to assess the effect of editing and modeling of milk production data for genetic evaluation of Murrah buffaloes. Six strategies for evaluating milk production were analyzed: observed milk production (OMP); adjustment of milk production data to 305 (MP305) and 270 (MP270) days of lactation; removal of the 5 (MP5%) and 10% (MP10%) shortest lactation periods; and milk production along the lactation period as linear covariate (MPCO). Genetic parameters were estimated using the Bayesian inference, with heritability estimates of 0.19 to 0.23 and repeatability estimates of 0.35 to 0.36. Sires classified by OMP were high correlated to those classified by the other models, however, correlations to MP270, MP305 and MPCO...

Estimates of genetic parameters of wood traits for sawn timber production in Eucalyptus grandis Genet. Mol. Biol.
Santos,Paulo Eduardo Telles dos; Geraldi,Isaias Olívio; Garcia,José Nivaldo.
In this study, the breeding perspectives of 41 open-pollinated progenies of Eucalyptus grandis were evaluated based on their wood traits. The progenies were distributed in two experiments in a randomized complete block design, with three replicates and linear plots containing six plants each. The traits were assessed at eight years of age. Two trees from each plot were selected for this assessment based on better growth, stem form and phytosanity. Significant differences in basic density, sapwood/heartwood ratio, bowing, specific gravity, parallel compression and static bending were detected among the progenies. These traits were potentially promising for breeding programs, with heritability coefficients that varied from 0.34 to 0.61 on a progeny mean...

Estimates of heritability and genetic correlations for meat quality traits in broilers Scientia Agricola
Gaya,Leila de Genova; Mourão,Gerson Barreto; Ferraz,José Bento Sterman; Mattos,Elisângela Chicaroni de; Costa,Andrezza Marcovig Moreira Alves da; Michelan Filho,Tércio; Rosa,Alessandra Fernandes; Felício,Andrezza Maria; Eler,Joanir Pereira.
Broiler meat quality is one of the primary factors considered by the poultry industry. This study was conducted to estimate heritability and genetic correlation coefficients for meat quality traits in a single male broiler line. The meat ultimate pH (24 h after slaughter) and lightness presented the highest heritability estimates. Given the estimated genetic correlations, the pH measured at 15 min and 24 h after slaughtering, as well as lightness, were characterized by a close and negative genetic relationship with water holding capacity traits. In contrast, meat quality traits exhibited only non-significant genetic correlations with performance and carcass traits. Noticed exceptions were breast weight, which was genetically and favorably associated with...

Estimation of genetic parameters for test-day milk yield in Holstein cows using a random regression model Genet. Mol. Biol.
Cobuci,Jaime Araujo; Euclydes,Ricardo Frederico; Lopes,Paulo Sávio; Costa,Claudio Napolis; Torres,Robledo de Almeida; Pereira,Carmen Silva.
Test-day milk yield records of 11,023 first-parity Holstein cows were used to estimate genetic parameters for milk yield during different lactation periods. (Co)variance components were estimated using two random regression models, RRM1 and RRM2, and the restricted maximum likelihood method, compared by the likelihood ratio test. Additive genetic variances determined by RRM1 and additive genetic and permanent environmental variances estimated by RRM2 were described, using the Wilmink function. Residual variance was constant throughout lactation for the two models. The heritability estimates obtained by RRM1 (0.34 to 0.56) were higher than those obtained by RRM2 (0.15 to 0.31). Due to the high heritability estimates for milk yield throughout lactation and...

Estimation of genetic parameters in the analysis of square lattice experiment group Bragantia
VIANA,JOSÉ MARCELO SORIANO; REGAZZI,ADAIR JOSÉ.
Aiming to demonstrate how to obtain unbiased estimates of genetic parameters of base populations, unaffected by genotype x environment effects, this paper presents the variance and covariance components of the intra-block analysis of a group of square lattice experiments and the estimators of the components associated to treatment effect. Random model and mixed models with environment effect fixed and other effects random are considered. In the analysis with treatments not corrected for blocks/replications/environments, the estimators of the variance and covariance components due to treatment effect are different from those of the analysis considering the complete block model. Data from two experiments of a breeding program of Eucalyptus pyrocarpa were...

Estimation of genetic parameters in the square lattice analysis Bragantia
VIANA,JOSÉ MARCELO SORIANO; REGAZZI,ADAIR JOSÉ.
This paper shows how to obtain unbiased estimates of genetic parameters of base populations, e.g., genotypic variance among families, heritability on a family mean basis, genotypic correlation and direct and indirect expected genetic gains, when the sampled families were evaluated in square lattice experiment. The theoretical part presents the variance and covariance components of the intra-block analysis of square lattice and the estimators of the components associated to treatment effect, considering the ordinary least squares method. In the analysis with treatments not corrected for blocks/replications, the estimator of the component due to treatment effect is equal to that of the analysis considering the complete block model. Experimental data from a...

Estimative of genetic parameters in progeny test of Pinus caribaea Morelet var. hondurensis Barret & Golfari by quantitative traits and microsatellite markers Bragantia
Tambarussi,Evandro Vagner; Sebbenn,Alexandre Magno; Moraes,Mário Luiz Teixeira de; Zimback,Léo; Palomino,Edwin Camacho; mori,Edson seizo.
The aims of this work were to estimate the coefficient of relatedness within families and the genetic parameters for growth related traits in a progeny test from an open-pollinated variety of Pinus caribaea Morelet hondurensis Barret & Golfari, established in Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil. The experimental design was the triple 10 x 10 lattice, with 96 families, three replicates, and ten plants per plot. Fourteen years after planting, the trial was measured for the following traits: total height, diameter at breast height (DBH), and true volume. The estimation of coefficients of relatedness within family from microsatellite loci indicated that families are true half-sibs (^r xy = 0.253). Thus, the additive genetic variance (σ2A) can be estimated...

Factors affecting the selling prices of calves in auctions in Santa Catarina State, Brazil R. Bras. Zootec.
Fornari,Giordano Bruno; Menegassi,Sílvio Renato Oliveira; Pereira,Gabriel Ribas; Oliveira,Tamara Esteves de; Barcellos,Júlio Otávio Jardim.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of genetic group and calf sex on selling prices in auctions in the state of Santa Catarina (SC), Brazil. We evaluated 33,143 animals, representing 3,587 lots in 47 auctions from 2009 to 2014. The calves were classified according to genetic groups: British breed or crossbreed (BX); Continental breed or crossbreed (CX); Zebu breed or crossbreed (ZC); British and Continental crossbreed (BC); and Bos taurus and Bos indicus crossbreed (TI). The lots were composed of male and female calves. The years presenting low and high changes in the price of calves were similar to the variation in the price of beef cattle and, in 2014, the calf price reached its highest value (R$5.36). Male calves were...
